LONDON (Reuters) – Angst-ridden Mancunian rock quartet The Smiths have beaten off competition from the Beatles and the Rolling Stones to be declared music bible NME’s most important rock group of the last 50 years.

NME goes glossy to celebrate 50th anniversary

NME is celebrating its 50th anniversary by going glossy.

The new-look NME magazine goes on sale tomorrow.

The anniversary issue will feature the first cover shots of bands including Blur, Oasis, David Bowie, John Lydon, The Prodigy and U2.

The issue will also detail NME’s choice of the top 50 acts in its history.

NME says it will retain its newspaper-style content, but feature a glossy cover, more pages and enhanced photography.
